Brandon Montanari, age 34, Rohail Kahn, age 28, and Michael Williams, age 38, have pleaded guilty to charges related to depriving an inmate of his rights at Mid-State Correctional Facility. The charges arose from an incident in April 2023 when the trio assaulted an inmate by punching and kicking him, resulting in bodily harm. In addition, they admitted to conspiring to lie about the incident during an internal investigation.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and Craig L. Tremaroli, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI, along with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations, is conducting the investigation.
The sentencing for the three former prison guards is set for late July and August. Each defendant could face up to 10 years of imprisonment, a supervised release period of up to three years post-imprisonment, and a fine of up to $250,000. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael F. Perry and Michael D. Gadarian.
The charges highlight serious breaches of conduct by correctional facility personnel and underscore ongoing efforts by authorities to address such violations.
