A Guatemalan national, Mario Lopez, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston for illegally reentering the United States after deportation. Lopez, aged 35, faces one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. He was previously arrested and charged by a criminal complaint in March 2025 and is currently detained awaiting trial.
The charging documents indicate that Lopez was deported from the United States on December 8, 2010, following an assault conviction in Maryland. It is alleged that after his removal, he attempted to reenter the United States twice in 2022 but was denied entry both times. Subsequently, Lopez unlawfully reentered the country, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) became aware of his presence following arrests in November 2023, March 2024, and December 2024.
If convicted, Lopez faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Following any sentence imposed, he is subject to deportation. Sentences are determined by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director in Boston for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations. Assistant U.S. Attorney John J. Reynolds is prosecuting the case.
It is important to note that the details in the charging documents are allegations, and Lopez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
