Brockton man sentenced for drug trafficking and firearm charges

A Brockton resident connected with the Cameron Street gang has received a sentence for drug and firearm offenses. Steve Depina, aged 38, was sentenced to 66 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. His sentence was handed down by U.S. Senior District Court Judge William G. Young.

In October 2024, Depina admitted guilt for distributing cocaine and cocaine base and for possession of a firearm and ammunition despite being a convicted felon. The Cameron Street gang, which operates primarily in the Dorchester area of Boston, is known for using violence to maintain and expand its influence.

In February 2022, Depina was documented by investigators selling about 58 grams of cocaine to a cooperating witness he believed to be another gang member. The transaction occurred near his place of work. A month later, he sold approximately 60 grams of cocaine base, a 9-millimeter pistol, and 16 rounds of ammunition to the same cooperating witness. A search of Depina’s home in April 2022 led to the discovery of more cocaine base and another firearm.

At the time of these illegal activities, Depina was already under state probation related to a 2018 conviction in the Plymouth Superior Court for intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl. Because of this conviction, he was legally barred from possessing firearms and ammunition.

The announcement of Depina's sentencing came from United States Attorney Leah B. Foley, in collaboration with several law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (Boston Field Division) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (New England Field Division). The Boston Police, Massachusetts State Police, and other regional police departments contributed to the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher Pohl and Charles Dell’Anno led the prosecution.

This case forms part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Strike Force Initiative. The initiative aims to dismantle major drug traffickers and criminal organizations through intelligence-driven, multi-agency operations. More information on the OCDETF Program is available online.

The other individuals charged in the indictment remain innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court.
