U.S. Secretary of Labor, Lori Chavez-DeRemer, has issued a warning to state governors regarding the allocation of federal funds. She emphasized the importance of adhering to President Trump’s directives, which discourage the use of tax dollars to support illegal immigration. In a letter addressed to the governors, Chavez-DeRemer highlighted potential consequences for states that do not meet their legal obligations, particularly the loss of federal funding via the Title III UI administrative grant.
"Our nation’s unemployment benefits exist solely for workers who are eligible to receive them," wrote Secretary Chavez-DeRemer. "Unemployment benefits are not a handout for those in our country illegally."
This directive follows a communication from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration to state unemployment insurance administrators. They were encouraged to utilize the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s SAVE immigration database. This resource, available at no cost due to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's efforts, aims to help states verify the immigration status of those filing for unemployment claims, indicating their status as U.S. citizens if applicable.
“I am committed to ensuring that the U.S. Department of Labor enforces the law and will personally work to safeguard Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars. I look forward to working with you on this effort,” stated Chavez-DeRemer in her concluding message to the governors.
