A Corpus Christi resident has admitted guilt to embezzling over $280,000 from a local labor union. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.

Robert Cirilo, a former president of the United Steelworkers Local 13-1647, pleaded guilty to wire fraud and embezzlement from a labor organization. Cirilo acknowledged making approximately 430 unauthorized transactions from union accounts for personal use and concealing these actions by misleading union members. He admitted the embezzlement amounted to over $280,000.

U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos is set to impose sentencing on August 12. Cirilo could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 maximum fine for wire fraud, along with up to five years and a $10,000 fine for embezzlement.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Department of Labor’s Office of Labor Management Standards, with prosecution by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tyler Foster and John Marck.
