A Virginia man has been sentenced in Boston for illegal firearm possession. Ted Therrien, 54, from Newport News, Virginia, received a sentence of time served plus two weeks, totaling 356 days in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. Therrien had pleaded guilty in November 2024 to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Court documents detail that in July 2021, Therrien boarded a commercial fishing vessel in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, with a Ruger .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol and nine rounds of ammunition. After a dispute with other crew members, he fired the gun into the air. The U.S. Coast Guard intervened and removed him from the vessel. Therrien, previously convicted of a felony, was not permitted to have a firearm or ammunition.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Steven Firth, Special Agent in Charge of the Coast Guard Investigative Service, Northeast Region. The United States Marshals Service and the Fairhaven Police Department provided substantial assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elianna Nuzum of the Criminal Division handled the prosecution.
