A man involved in multiple drug store robberies in Raleigh, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison. Marvin Rashaad Cummings, 34, was sentenced on April 16, 2025, after pleading guilty to committing Hobbs Act Robbery and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. His guilty plea was entered on December 4, 2024.
Court documents and other presented information reveal the Raleigh Police Department responded to a robbery at a CVS store on New Bern Avenue on December 29, 2022. Witnesses described a black male wearing a gray hoodie and a black mask who approached a register to purchase gum. He then displayed a black handgun and demanded money from the register before leading a store clerk to the safe, stealing a large sum of money, which had a tracker attached. The police traced the money to a red sedan near the CVS, where Cummings was found in the driver's seat wearing clothes that matched the suspect’s description. A mask and handgun matching witness descriptions were also discovered in his possession.
Cummings confessed to involvement in six robberies across Raleigh and Knightdale over the previous month, using a real handgun each time. His criminal history includes convictions for Hobbs Act robbery, conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, bank robbery, and firearm possession in furtherance of violence.
This conviction results from the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP) initiative, aimed at identifying and targeting the main contributors to violent crime through collaborative local, state, and federal law enforcement efforts. The initiative emphasizes strategic enforcement, interagency work, and intelligence-led policing.
Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, announced the sentencing, executed by U.S. District Judge Terrence W. Boyle. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Raleigh Police Department, and the Knightdale Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Newby and Sarah E. Nokes.
