U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in collaboration with the Virginia State Police, has arrested a Guatemalan national, Wilmer Ramos-Giron, 34, in Chantilly on April 24. Ramos-Giron, previously convicted of a federal firearms offense, faces current charges of abduction by force, assault on a family member, and felony strangulation causing injury.

“Wilmer Ramos-Giron represents a significant threat to our Virginia residents,” said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Washington, D.C. Field Office Director Russell Hott. “He has displayed a blatant disregard for our immigration laws, and more importantly, for the safety and wellbeing of our community. He is a violent and recidivist threat to public safety that ICE Washington, D.C. cannot tolerate. Regardless of the obstacles placed in our way, we remain committed to prioritizing public safety. The men and women of ICE Washington, D.C. will continue to arrest and remove criminal alien threats from our Washington, D.C. and Virginia neighborhoods, and ensure their victims receive the justice they so rightly deserve.”

Ramos-Giron first entered the United States illegally at an undisclosed location and time. He was arrested by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office on February 17, 2012, for brandishing a firearm. That led to his removal from the U.S. to Guatemala on April 19, 2012, after an immigration judge's order.

He returned unlawfully to the U.S., where he was arrested again on April 16, 2019, at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center under a federal warrant for being an alien in possession of a firearm. He was convicted on July 12, 2019, and sentenced to nine months in prison, following which he was removed to Guatemala on January 21, 2020.

Ramos-Giron reentered the country illegally once more and was arrested by Fairfax County Police on January 27 for felony abduction by force, among other charges. An immigration detainer was filed by ICE. However, the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office did not honor the detainer, releasing Ramos-Giron back into the community.

Ramos-Giron's case reflects ongoing challenges faced by ICE in dealing with criminal alien threats, reiterating their commitment to community safety as articulated by the organization.

Members of the public are encouraged to report crimes or suspicious activities to ICE through their hotline or online form.
