Honduran national indicted in New Orleans for illegal firearm possession

A Honduran man has been indicted in New Orleans for possession of a firearm while being unlawfully present in the United States. Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced the indictment of Jhosmy Josue Perez-Alvarez, age 24, on April 24, 2025. Perez-Alvarez is charged under Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(5)(A) and 924(a)(8).

Court documents indicate Perez-Alvarez was found with a Glock nine-millimeter handgun on January 2, 2025. He was apprehended for immigration violations by the New Orleans Police Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Enforcement and Removal Operations officers.

If found guilty, Perez-Alvarez could face up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson emphasized that an indictment is merely a formal accusation, and guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. He acknowledged the efforts of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Enforcement and Removal Operations and the New Orleans Police Department in the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Spiro G. Latsis from the General Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice nationwide initiative that targets illegal immigration, aims to eradicate cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protects communities from violent crime. The operation is supported by the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.
