Veterinary students from North Carolina State University had the chance to observe the role of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agriculture Specialists in safeguarding American agriculture. The tour took place at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on April 22. Aimed at introducing students to the federal functions of veterinarians in public health, the visit is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Regulatory Medicine Selective program.

Port Director Maxwell Young led the group through inspection areas, where they watched agriculture specialists check passengers arriving from London and demonstrate items seized from travelers. Prohibited items like fruits, meats, and animal products were highlighted for their potential to carry diseases. "Our agriculture team plays a critical role in keeping foreign pests and diseases out of the U.S.," noted Maxwell Young.

Dr. Lisa Gamsjager, Assistant Professor of Ruminant Medicine at NC State, emphasized the value of the experience, stating, "This experience is crucial in preparing students for careers that bridge clinical knowledge with public service." She further added that touring the border inspection facilities allowed students to see the contribution of veterinarians to biosecurity.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport is an important point for agricultural inspections due to its international flights from various countries like Panama, Germany, Mexico, Great Britain, and France.

CBP's mission is carried out by officers and agriculture specialists at Ports of Entry. They screen travelers and cargo, focusing on illicit substances and prohibited agriculture among other things, protecting the public and the economy from harm. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is noted as America's leading law enforcement and border management agency. It aims to ensure security through cooperation and intelligence.
