National Federation of Independent Business supports H.J. Res. 88, opposing California emissions waiver

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed support for the U.S. House of Representatives' passage of H.J. Res. 88. This resolution, if enacted, would rescind a federal waiver that enables California to implement stringent vehicle emissions standards that mandate 100% of new passenger vehicle sales be zero-emissions by 2035.

Adam Temple, NFIB Senior Vice President for Advocacy, stated, “California’s waiver authority under the Clean Air Act enables the state to impose de facto electric vehicle (EV) mandates that extend beyond its borders, impacting millions of small businesses across the country.” He further noted that over twelve states have adopted California's standards, which he termed as an “overreach" that imposes "costly and unrealistic mandates on small business owners."

The NFIB highlighted findings from a recent member ballot, revealing that 90% of its members believe regulatory burdens should be lifted to reduce transportation costs for small businesses. Additionally, 96% oppose bans or restrictions on consumer products like gas-powered vehicles. "These results reflect a simple truth: small business owners need reliable and affordable transportation choices," Temple stated.

The NFIB has been advocating for small businesses across the United States for over 80 years and continues to represent their interests in both Washington, D.C., and state capitals nationwide.
