A Sapulpa woman has been sentenced for second-degree murder in Indian Country, according to an announcement from U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. Christin Brianna Kelley, aged 35, received a sentence of 240 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, as determined by U.S. District Judge John D. Russell.
The incident occurred shortly after 4:00 a.m. on January 9, 2024. Kelley and the victim, Isaac Smith, were in a car parked at a gas station in Sand Springs when Kelley shot Smith multiple times, resulting in his death. Law enforcement officials recovered the pistol used in the incident from a nearby trash can.
As a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Kelley will remain in custody until she is transferred to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
The investigation into the case was conducted by the FBI, the Sand Springs Police Department, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Eric O. Johnston and Stephen Flynn prosecuted the case.
This case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which is an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The project emphasizes collaboration between law enforcement and communities to enhance safety. On May 26, 2021, the Department of Justice launched a strategy to further bolster PSN, focusing on increasing trust, supporting community efforts to prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
