Trenton man receives prison sentence for ammunition possession linked to shooting

A Mercer County man has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for possessing ammunition as a felon, related to a shooting incident in Trenton. U.S. Attorney Alina Habba announced the sentencing of Rashon Lawery, 27, who had previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner.

Lawery was charged with unlawful possession of twenty-six rounds of 9-millimeter ammunition by a convicted felon. The charges stem from an incident on May 23, 2022, when Trenton Police responded to a shooting where three individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Officers recovered six shell casings at the scene.

During a subsequent foot pursuit through a park in Trenton, Lawery discarded an unserialized semiautomatic pistol with a high-capacity magazine loaded with twenty rounds of ammunition. A ballistics laboratory later confirmed that the shell casings found at the scene were discharged from Lawery's weapon.

In addition to his prison sentence, Lawery will serve three years of supervised release following his incarceration.

U.S. Attorney Alina Habba credited special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' Newark Field Division and Trenton Satellite Office; officers from the Trenton Police Department; and detectives and prosecutors from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office for their efforts in this case.

The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Agnew from the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Division in Trenton.

Defense counsel for Rashon Lawery was Andrea G. Aldana, Esq., based in Trenton.
