The Stimson Center has joined the Global Alliance for Peace Operations (GAPO), an organization consisting of over 50 think tanks, research institutes, and civil society groups. This coalition is coordinated by the Global Governance Institute, the Berlin Center for International Peace Operations, and Amani Africa Media and Research Services. GAPO leverages the expertise of nearly 100 peace operations experts worldwide.

The Alliance was formed in consultation with Germany's Federal Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence to provide insights ahead of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial scheduled for May 12-13, 2025, in Berlin. This event is considered crucial for the future of United Nations peace operations and multilateral crisis response efforts. GAPO aims to offer evidence-based policy recommendations and amplify civil society's voice in global peace dialogues.

Lisa Sharland and Andrew Hyde from the Stimson Center are contributing to GAPO's shared policy agenda. Sharland will present at a symposium on May 12 about "The Future of Protection of Civilians," showcasing findings from recent research by the Stimson Center.

Leading up to the ministerial meeting, GAPO plans a series of events including side meetings and an online workshop on April 29 to discuss policy proposals based on collaborative papers and issue briefs produced by its members.

All related outputs and updates will be available on the Global Alliance for Peace Operations website, serving as a resource for experts in peace operations.

For over thirty years, the Stimson Center has focused on international security through research, engagement, and policy innovation. Founded during the late Cold War era, it continues to address global issues with new ideas aimed at promoting stability and justice.
