U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has apprehended a Brazilian fugitive in Milford, Massachusetts. Fernando Antonio Vieira-Martins, 34, was arrested on May 1. He is wanted by Brazilian authorities to serve a sentence following his conviction for murder.
Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston, commented on the arrest: “Fernando Antonio Vieira-Martins murdered someone in his home country and attempted to subvert justice by fleeing to the United States. He represents a significant hazard to the residents of Massachusetts.” She added that while some might accept criminal alien offenders settling in New England communities, ICE Boston prioritizes public safety by arresting and removing such threats.
Vieira-Martins was convicted on June 29, 2022, for murder in Brazil and sentenced to 24 years and nine months in prison. After his conviction, he fled Brazil and entered the United States illegally on March 9, 2023, near Calexico, California.
Brazilian authorities issued a criminal arrest warrant for Vieira-Martins on May 10, 2023, due to his failure to serve his sentence. Following his recent arrest by ICE, Vieira-Martins remains in custody pending removal proceedings.
