Gang member sentenced for drug trafficking in Martin County

Hayden O’Byrne United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida | The Florida Bar

On May 8, 2025, Daniel Thorr Gatlin, a documented gang member from Jacksonville, Arkansas, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks in West Palm Beach. Gatlin will also serve five years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

Gatlin was arrested on January 3, 2024, outside a convenience store in Stuart, Florida. Martin County Sheriff Deputies intercepted him as he attempted to sell one pound of methamphetamine to an individual he believed to be a legitimate buyer. During the investigation, it was confirmed that Gatlin had offered to sell various drugs while residing at a sober home in Broward County. He traveled to Martin County with the intention of distributing controlled substances.

Gatlin is affiliated with the Sureños gang, also known as Sur 13, which is linked to the Mexican Mafia. In a recorded conversation during the investigation, Gatlin mentioned his gang ties and attributed his ability to receive more than three pounds of methamphetamine for distribution in South Florida to these connections.

On February 19, 2025, Gatlin pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. The case was announced by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida along with acting Special Agent in Charge José R. Figueroa of HSI's Miami Field Division and Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek.

The investigation was conducted by HSI Fort Pierce and the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Assistant United States Attorney Breezye Telfair prosecuted the case.
