A Sherman man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for a firearms violation, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin, Jr. Mouaidad Mohamad, aged 30, was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm and received a 180-month sentence from U.S. District Judge Sean D. Jordan on May 9, 2025.
Court documents revealed that on August 5, 2022, law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire in Sherman. Officers found that Mohamad had fired two shots from a vehicle window before coercing his girlfriend to drive away. Later that day, Mohamad was apprehended in the same vehicle. Further investigation showed he had previous felony convictions for robbery and burglary of a habitation, which legally barred him from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between federal, state, and local entities. PSN focuses on identifying significant violent crime issues and developing strategies for addressing them by targeting high-risk offenders and working with community-based prevention programs.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives led the investigation alongside the Sherman Police Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney William R. Tatum prosecuted the case.
