In anticipation of National Police Week 2025, which will be observed from May 11 to May 17, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, Richard D. Westphal, acknowledges the contributions and sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel at various levels.
U.S. Attorney Westphal expressed his appreciation: “This week we take time to pause and express our gratitude and thanks to the unwavering commitment, courage and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in protecting and serving our communities in Iowa. Not only for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, but those who bravely set out to public serve each day." He emphasized that "Every hour of every day, federal, state and local law enforcement officers place the safety of our communities above their own," attributing Iowa's safety largely to their dedication.
Westphal further stated: "We stand together in honoring the brave men and women who have died in the line of duty, and supporting the survivors, their families, and fellow officers here in Iowa and across the nation.”
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reports that 147 officers across federal, state, tribal, and local agencies lost their lives while on duty in 2024.
National Police Week was first proclaimed by President Kennedy in 1962 as a time to remember law enforcement officers' service and sacrifices. Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed annually on May 15 to specifically honor those killed or disabled in duty.
