Franklinton contractor pleads guilty to mail theft and forged check scheme

Acting United States Attorney Michael M. Simpson has announced that Rachel Watts Sanders, a 40-year-old resident of Loranger, Louisiana, has pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and mail theft. The plea was entered on May 8, 2025.

Court documents reveal that Sanders confessed to stealing over forty checks from the U.S. mail, forging endorsements on these checks, and subsequently depositing them into her bank account.

Sanders could face up to twenty years in prison for wire fraud and an additional five years for mail theft. Both charges also carry potential fines of up to $250,000 each. She may also be subject to three years of supervised release for each charge and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee per count.

The investigation was conducted by the United States Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General. Assistant United States Attorneys Christine Calogero and Duane A. Evans are handling the prosecution.
