The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has announced the cancellation of an $800,000 diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to the University of West Florida. The announcement was made in a post on X.
According to DOGE, the grant was identified as "wasteful." The DEI grant, titled "Educating Science and Mathematics Majors to Teach with Social Justice Models in High-Needs Schools," was intended to train math and science teachers in incorporating social justice and "cultural responsiveness" into their classrooms.
A document detailing the DEI grant said that scholars would participate in a two-summer social injustice citizen science project and graduate as highly qualified science and math teachers. These new educators were expected to positively impact two partnering high-need districts by elevating educational opportunities in a culturally responsive manner.

An April 2025 Harvard-Harris Poll indicates that 69% of voters support efforts to find and eliminate fraud and waste in government expenditures, while 31% favor slashing $1 trillion in government spending. Additionally, a majority of voters believe the U.S. should aim for budget balance by reducing government expenditures and conducting a comprehensive review of current spending.
DOGE is described as a federal agency focused on optimizing government spending, reducing waste, and ensuring accountability in contract management. By reviewing expenditures and canceling non-essential contracts, DOGE aims to improve fiscal responsibility and enhance the effectiveness of public resource allocation.
