U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang has sentenced James Kareen Day, a 43-year-old resident of Landover, Maryland, to 16 years in federal prison for his involvement in a series of armed and attempted armed robberies across Howard, Montgomery, and Prince George's County. Following his prison term, Day will undergo five years of supervised release.
The sentencing was announced by Kelly O. Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, alongside William J. DelBagno from the FBI's Baltimore Field Office; Chief Gregory Der from the Howard County Police Department; Chief Marc Yamada from the Montgomery County Police Department; and Chief Malik Aziz from the Prince George’s County Police Department.
According to Day's guilty plea, he conducted three armed robberies and four attempted armed robberies between December 2022 and February 2023 at various businesses within these counties. In some instances, he brandished a short-barrel shotgun while demanding cash and valuables before fleeing with money and other property.
This case falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative effort among law enforcement agencies aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence to enhance community safety. The initiative was strengthened by a violent crime reduction strategy launched on May 26, 2021.
U.S. Attorney Hayes expressed appreciation for the efforts of the FBI, HCPD, MCPD, and PGPD in their investigation of this case. She also acknowledged Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dawn Williams and Timothy Hagan for prosecuting.
