Ohio man receives prison sentence for federal drug charge

Gary Neal Abbott, a 52-year-old resident of Chesapeake, Ohio, received a prison sentence today for a federal drug offense. The sentence, delivered in Huntington, West Virginia, includes five years of incarceration followed by five years of supervised release. Abbott was charged with possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.

Court documents reveal that on August 9, 2024, law enforcement officers stopped Abbott's vehicle in Ashton, West Virginia. During the stop, Abbott informed the officer about a firearm and possible presence of marijuana and methamphetamine in his vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered approximately 8.7 ounces of methamphetamine in a black bag along with smaller quantities of methamphetamine and marijuana in another container. Additionally, a Glock model 30 Gen4 .45-caliber pistol was found on the front seat.

The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston who praised the efforts of the West Virginia State Police involved in the investigation.

United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers handed down the sentence while Assistant United States Attorney Stephanie Taylor led the prosecution.
