Bryant Dewayne Underwood, a 36-year-old resident of Spiro, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for possessing an unregistered firearm. The announcement was made by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alongside the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office. Underwood pleaded guilty on January 13, 2025. Investigators reported that during a traffic stop on October 26, 2023, deputies found Underwood with a short-barreled rifle chambered in 5.56 NATO (.223) caliber. The firearm had been previously reported stolen from Arkansas and was not registered to Underwood in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to strengthen PSN with principles such as fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White presided over the hearing at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Underwood will remain in custody under the U.S. Marshals Service until he is transported to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility to serve his non-paroleable sentence.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jarrod Leaman and Edith A. Singer.
