The National Farmers Union (NFU) has expressed its views following the House Agriculture Committee's approval of budget reconciliation instructions. NFU President Rob Larew shared his thoughts on the committee's decision, highlighting both appreciation and concern.
"We appreciate that the House Agriculture Committee recognizes the financial pressures facing family farmers and ranchers," said Larew. He acknowledged proposals aimed at strengthening crop insurance, enhancing the farm safety net, and maintaining voluntary conservation programs as important steps towards securing the future of the food system.
However, Larew pointed out issues with the approach taken by the committee. "But this is not the best way to produce a meaningful farm bill," he stated. According to Larew, prioritizing farm and nutrition interests separately leads to unnecessary division and weakens broader efforts.
He emphasized that a robust farm bill should address all challenges facing agriculture and rural communities comprehensively. "A strong farm bill—however it comes together—must reflect the full scope of challenges facing agriculture and rural communities, and it must work for everyone it touches: farmers, ranchers, and families across the country."
