Meredith Wilson, a 52-year-old resident of the District, was found guilty by a Superior Court jury on May 14, 2025. The conviction was for felony-enhanced second-degree theft, marking the first jury trial in over ten years in the District for such a charge. This announcement came from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.
The conviction carries a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in prison. Sentencing is set for July 15, 2025, as scheduled by Superior Court Judge Andrea Hertzfeld.
Evidence presented during the trial showed that Wilson stole jewelry, handbags, and household goods valued at over $700 from a Target store located in Columbia Heights on June 27.
District of Columbia laws stipulate that individuals convicted of first or second-degree theft with two or more prior theft convictions can face prosecution for felony-enhanced theft. This charge mandates at least one year of incarceration upon conviction. Wilson had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree theft twice before, once in 2017 and again in 2018 within the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. These past convictions qualified her for the felony-enhanced theft charge she faced in this case.
The Metropolitan Police Department conducted the investigation into this case. Assistant United States Attorneys Jason B.A. McCullough and Maggie E. Sullivan prosecuted and tried it.
