David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that Gavin Hammett, also known as "G" and "Silk," has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. The 60-year-old Bridgeport resident was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford for drug trafficking and firearm possession offenses.

Court documents reveal that in early 2024, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Bridgeport High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force and Stamford Police Department identified Hammett as part of a network distributing cocaine and fentanyl in the Bridgeport area. Investigators conducted controlled purchases of fentanyl from Hammett between February and April 2024.

Hammett was arrested on May 14, 2024. A search of his residence uncovered approximately two kilograms of cocaine, around 39 grams of fentanyl, two handguns, two loaded gun magazines, and an empty magazine.

He has been detained since his arrest. On February 21, 2025, he pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl and possession of a firearm related to drug trafficking.

This marks Hammett's third federal conviction. In July 1997, he was sentenced in South Carolina for distributing cocaine. In October 2011, he received a sentence in Connecticut for distributing cocaine and crack. In October 2020, his sentence was reduced due to a pandemic-related motion for compassionate release after serving nine years.

The investigation involved multiple agencies including the DEA’s HIDTA Task Force from Bridgeport Resident Office along with various police departments across Connecticut. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Stolfi Collins through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces Program.
