Birmingham man receives over three-year sentence for sports center robbery

A Birmingham man has been sentenced for his involvement in a robbery at the Hibbett Sports Distribution Center, as announced by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.

U.S. District Court Judge Madeline H. Haikala sentenced Mario Autwun Scott, aged 42, to 45 months in prison. In November 2024, Scott admitted guilt to charges of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery and interference with commerce through threats or violence.

Scott's co-conspirator, Michael Anthony Pippens, also 42 and from Birmingham, had previously received a sentence of 30 months in prison. In January 2025, Pippens pleaded guilty to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery.

Court documents reveal that in October 2022, Scott executed the robbery at the Hibbett Sports Distribution Center located in Shelby County. He stole two trailers filled with sporting goods merchandise valued at over $84,000. Before the robbery took place, Pippens supplied Scott with a box truck to facilitate the transportation of the stolen items.

The case was investigated by the FBI alongside the Alabaster Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Darius C. Greene and Lloyd C. Peeples were responsible for prosecuting the case.
