This milestone voyage highlighted the crucial role of the United States Merchant Marine and its skilled mariners in supporting both economic activities and national defense.
Merchant mariners have consistently contributed to national security by supporting military operations during conflicts. Their contributions were especially notable during World War II when over 243,000 merchant mariners participated in aiding the war effort despite facing significant risks. The casualty rate among these civilian seafarers was higher than any other branch of the U.S. military during that period, underscoring their bravery and dedication.
Beyond defense, merchant mariners are instrumental in bolstering America's economic strength by facilitating global trade through transporting goods, energy, and raw materials. They support vital industries such as shipping, shipbuilding, logistics, and energy.
President Donald J. Trump emphasized America's maritime heritage by signing an Executive Order aimed at restoring maritime dominance through investments in shipbuilding and enhancing mariner training programs. These initiatives aim to secure supply chains and protect trade routes against foreign threats.
On National Maritime Day 2025, President Trump issued a proclamation urging Americans to honor the contributions of merchant mariners by displaying the national flag and encouraging ships under the American flag to dress ship.
"Today, we celebrate the men and women of the United States Merchant Marine and all those who support our maritime industry," said President Trump. "Their dedication upholds our national defense, fuels our economy, and continues a proud tradition that has shaped our Nation since its earliest days."
The Congress established May 22 as National Maritime Day in 1933 to commemorate S.S. Savannah's transoceanic voyage in 1819. This day serves as a reminder of America's enduring connection to its maritime roots.
