Federal charges have been filed against Dominique Javon Thompson, a 34-year-old man from Lewiston-Woodville, North Carolina. Thompson is accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm following an incident involving gunfire directed at Bertie County Deputies.
According to the Criminal Complaint, deputies responded to reports of an armed individual at a residence in Lewiston-Woodville. Upon arrival, Thompson allegedly fired at their patrol vehicles. While the vehicles were struck multiple times, no deputies or K-9 units were injured. Thompson reportedly fled the scene in a White Hyundai Elantra.
Authorities later located the abandoned vehicle near Kinston. The Kinston Police Department apprehended Thompson during a traffic stop after finding him in the back seat of another car. A firearm matching the description of the one used in Bertie County was discovered in the glovebox.
Acting United States Attorney Daniel P. Bubar commented on the case: “We will work quickly and tirelessly to investigate anyone who tries to inflict violence against our law enforcement partners and break federal laws, as alleged in the complaint.” He also praised the collaborative efforts of federal and state agencies involved.
Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone M. Ruffin expressed relief that no injuries occurred during the incident: “Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the defendant was taken into custody without incident.”
Thompson faces charges under Title 18, United States Code Sections 922(g)(1) and 924 for being a felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel P. Bubar for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Multiple law enforcement agencies contributed to the investigation including local sheriff’s offices and police departments across several counties.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Phil Aubart is prosecuting this case. Court documents can be accessed through PACER or on the website of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina under Case No. 4:25-mj-01049.
It is important to note that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and that Thompson is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
