Bowling Green man sentenced for federal crimes involving odometer tampering

A Bowling Green man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $40,000 in restitution for his involvement in odometer tampering. Randy Huff, 59, owner of South Side Auto Sales in Bowling Green and Huff’s Auto Sales in Beaver Dam, was convicted of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit odometer tampering, and four counts of odometer tampering.

U.S. Attorney Michael A. Bennett of the Western District of Kentucky announced the sentencing alongside Special Agent in Charge Kevin Porter from the U.S. Department of Transportation. “Let this case serve notice to like-minded fraudsters that taking advantage of our citizens comes at a cost - federal prison and large fines,” said U.S. Attorney Bennett.

Court documents revealed that between June 2018 and January 2023, Huff orchestrated a scheme to defraud used car buyers by altering vehicle odometers to display lower mileage than actual. This involved purchasing high-mileage vehicles at auction and directing employees to replace their odometers with ones showing reduced mileage without informing buyers.

In addition to his prison sentence, Huff will undergo one year of supervised release following his incarceration.

An employee at South Side Auto Sales, Donnie Wilson, 51, also from Bowling Green, received a three-year probation sentence on March 11, 2025. He was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution for similar charges related to wire fraud and odometer tampering.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation along with the Kentucky Department of Transportation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Raymond McGee and Madison Sewell prosecuted the case.

Odometer fraud is estimated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to cause consumer losses exceeding $1 billion annually in the United States. The NHTSA has established a hotline for reporting such fraud at (800) 424-9393 or via email at odometerfraud@dot.gov. More information can be found on their website.
