Big Y Foods, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, has issued a voluntary recall of certain Made-To-Order Subs, Wraps, and Paninis sold on May 20 and May 21 at select retail locations in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The recall is due to potential contamination with Salmonella. This organism can cause serious infections, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
The affected items include any Made-To-Order Small Sub, Large Sub, 30” Super Sub, Wrap or Panini purchased during the specified dates at the listed Big Y stores. The potential contamination arose from sliced cucumbers supplied by Smartcuts that were implicated in the Bedner Growers Inc. Cucumber Outbreak investigation. These cucumbers were used as an ingredient option for customers ordering subs, wraps, or paninis at the sandwich service line within Big Y's Kitchen Department.
Following notification from Smartcuts about the cucumber issue, Big Y Foods stopped operations at all affected stores and removed products from the sub, wrap, and panini service lines. They also conducted thorough cleaning and sanitization of these areas.
All impacted items were made-to-order upon customer request and not prepackaged for self-service. As of now, no illnesses related to this recall have been reported.
Customers who bought these products are advised to return them or provide a receipt at the place of purchase for a full refund. For inquiries, consumers can contact Big Y Foods via email at wecare@bigy.com or call 1-800-828-2688 (Option #7) during business hours Monday through Friday. Additionally, Smartcuts can be reached at 1-860-525-3237.
