U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge Port of Entry have seized $74,103 in unreported U.S. currency during a recent enforcement action. The incident occurred on May 21 when CBP officers encountered a northbound 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and directed it to secondary inspection.

Port Director Tater Ortiz stated, "Our officers maintain strict vigilance, utilize their inspections experience, training and were able to uncover an alleged attempt to smuggle a significant amount of bulk cash." He emphasized that such seizures ensure compliance with federal currency reporting requirements while also resulting in criminal consequences for those attempting to evade these regulations.

During the examination, after receiving a negative declaration for currency exceeding $10,000, officers discovered stacks of unreported cash hidden under the clothing of two male U.S. citizens aged 20 and 21. The total amount seized was $74,103.

The CBP officers confiscated both the currency and the vehicle involved. Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested the two passengers and initiated a criminal investigation into the matter.

While carrying more than $10,000 is not illegal, failing to declare such amounts or concealing them with intent to evade reporting requirements constitutes a federal offense. Failure to declare may lead to seizure of the funds or arrest. Individuals can petition for the return of seized currency but must demonstrate that its source and intended use were legitimate.
