Kanawha County man sentenced for obstructing mail

Brice Allen Pomeroy, a 26-year-old resident of Hernshaw, was sentenced to two years of federal probation and ordered to pay $2,051.21 in restitution for obstructing mail. The sentencing took place in Charleston, West Virginia.

Court documents reveal that on May 11, 2023, Pomeroy disposed of approximately 227 pieces of mail by placing them into a trash can outside a gas service station in Charleston. At the time, he was employed as a mail handler by a United States Postal Service vendor at their facility in Charleston. The discarded mail included items such as Mother's Day, graduation, anniversary, and birthday cards. Any cash or gift cards initially contained within these mail pieces were removed before being discarded. Reports indicated that over $2,000 in cash or gift cards were stolen.

The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston who also commended the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for their investigative efforts.

The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Irene C. Berger with Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan T. Storage prosecuting the case.
