A woman from Vredenburgh, Alabama, Beverly Castophney, was sentenced to six months of house arrest followed by three years of probation. She was charged with conspiring to provide contraband to a federal inmate.
Court documents reveal that Castophney, aged 38, pleaded guilty to collaborating with jail guard Reginald Thames and federal inmate Vincent Lambert. The conspiracy involved introducing contraband into the Monroe County jail. Castophney was romantically involved with Lambert, and while he was incarcerated, they planned to leave a package containing contraband on Thames' car in exchange for money. On January 19, 2023, deputies observed Castophney placing the package on a vehicle in the parking lot. When Thames approached his car, he was intercepted by deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The package contained cell phones, chargers, cigarettes, and Adderall pills.
Vincent Lambert had been sentenced earlier this year to serve 12 months for conspiracy and possessing prison contraband. Reginald Thames received a sentence of six months for conspiracy and providing prison contraband.
The announcement came from U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello of the Southern District of Alabama.
The investigation was conducted by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Tandice Blackwood prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
