U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has apprehended a Guatemalan fugitive in Newark, New Jersey, who is wanted for two counts of attempted aggravated homicide in Guatemala. The arrest was made by ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Newark on May 13.
The individual, Adelso Garcia Martinez, aged 29, is a native of Guatemala. He was taken into custody for violations of the Immigration and Naturalization Act. Ricky Patel, Special Agent in Charge at ICE HSI Newark, commented on the case: “It is deplorable to imagine that a wanted fugitive would find illegal shelter in the United States with a child in tow and later go on to sponsor another alien.”
Garcia entered the United States unlawfully via Rio Grande, Texas on May 19, 2021. He was released into the country by U.S. Border Patrol on the same day.
An investigation conducted by HSI Newark led to Garcia's encounter in April 2025 during routine records checks. With assistance from HSI Guatemala City, it was confirmed that Garcia-Martinez had an active arrest warrant issued on February 18, 2021, in Guatemala for attempted aggravated homicide.
Following his arrest by ICE on May 13, Garcia received a notice to appear and is currently detained at Delaney Hall Detention Facility in New Jersey while awaiting removal proceedings.
