Hayden O’Byrne United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida | The Florida Bar
A former firefighter from Key West appeared in federal court today, facing charges related to possession of illegal firearms. The indictment accuses Vincent Michael Vega, aged 38, of having parts that could be used to assemble a destructive device such as an explosive bomb. Additionally, Vega allegedly possessed a modified semi-automatic rifle with a barrel shorter than the federally mandated 16 inches. These firearms were reportedly not registered under his name in the National Firearm Registration and Transfer Record.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida and acting Special Agent in Charge Gordon Mallory from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Miami Field Division.
The ATF's Miami office is leading the investigation into this case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Hannah is handling the prosecution.
It is important to note that an indictment serves only as an accusation; all defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
