Texas man sentenced for illegal firearm possession

Jeffrey Wayne Thompson, a 49-year-old resident of Fort Worth, Texas, has been sentenced to time served and three years of supervised release for a federal firearm crime. The announcement was made by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

The charge against Thompson stemmed from an investigation carried out by the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. On November 7, 2024, Thompson entered a guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The incident leading to his arrest occurred on February 21, 2023, when deputies discovered him with a handgun and six rounds of ammunition during a traffic stop. At that time, Thompson had a prior conviction for an offense punishable by more than one year in prison.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. The program's strategy includes fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.

Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White presided over the sentencing hearing at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael E. Robinson and Jonathan E. Soverly represented the prosecution.
