Oconee County man faces indictment for allegedly failing to report $1M income

A federal grand jury in Greenville has indicted Marion Keith Sheriff, a 60-year-old resident of Seneca, on four counts of filing false tax returns. The indictment alleges that Sheriff, who operated a landscaping business in the Upstate, did not report cashed business checks as income to the IRS from 2019 to 2022. The unreported income amounts to approximately $1,006,633.

If convicted, Sheriff could face up to three years in federal prison, a fine of $100,000, and one year of supervised release following any imprisonment. U.S. District Judge Jacquelyn D Austin is set to preside over the case.

The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Watkins will prosecute the case.

It is important to note that all charges are accusations at this stage. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
