Seventeen individuals were rescued from dangerous conditions in Nogales, Arizona, after authorities uncovered a smuggling operation. The discovery occurred last Wednesday when several people from Mexico, including a minor, were found inside a recreational vehicle and a small sedan. The vehicles had limited space and ventilation, with rising temperatures posing significant risks.
One person attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended by agents. All individuals are now safe and in custody. The driver of the sedan, identified as a United States citizen, is facing charges related to human smuggling.
Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean L. McGoffin commented on the situation: “This rescue likely prevented a tragedy. With summer temperatures already climbing, packing people into trailers and vehicles without proper ventilation or water is a recipe for disaster. Human lives should never be treated as cargo.”
