Jayvon Gattison, a 24-year-old resident of the District of Columbia and previously convicted killer, has been sentenced to 40 months in prison. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Jia M. Cobb after Gattison pleaded guilty on January 15, 2025, to unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department announced the sentencing. In addition to his prison term, Gattison will serve three years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that in October 2018, Gattison shot and killed a man during an attempted robbery related to a drug transaction. He was released from prison for that crime in July 2024 but was arrested again on October 9, 2024, while still on probation.
On that day at around 7 p.m., members of the MPD Robbery Suppression Unit were patrolling Channing Street NE when they observed five individuals smoking near a silver Lexus. Officers detected the smell of marijuana and detained all individuals present, including Gattison.
An officer confiscated a marijuana cigarette from Gattison's hand and found a bag containing drugs and a loaded Glock 17 pistol upon searching his belongings. The bag also contained cocaine base, as confirmed by field tests, along with $320.80 in cash and drug paraphernalia.
Gattison's criminal history includes a prior felony conviction for voluntary manslaughter in Prince Georges County, Maryland. He was sentenced on December 5, 2019, to ten years with four years suspended followed by three years probation.
The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan McFadden is prosecuting this case with previous involvement from former Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Mirabelli.
