August Egg Company has announced a recall of 1,700,000 dozen brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs due to potential Salmonella contamination. The Hilmar, California-based company is taking this step out of caution as Salmonella can cause severe infections in vulnerable groups such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
The affected eggs were distributed between February 3 and May 15, 2025, with sell-by dates from March 4 to June 4 within California and Nevada. Retailers carrying these products include Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, and Walmart locations across several states including Arizona and Illinois.
Consumers can identify the recalled eggs by checking for plant code numbers P-6562 or CA5330 with Julian Dates between 32 to 126 on the carton. Affected products are packed in fiber or plastic cartons.
This recall follows an ongoing investigation into a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak. August Egg Company has halted sales of fresh shell eggs temporarily and redirected them to an egg-breaking plant for pasteurization.
Customers are advised to return the recalled eggs to their purchase location for a full refund. Inquiries can be directed to the company at their provided contact number during business hours.
In a statement from August Egg Company: “It is important to know that when our processing plant identified this concern, we immediately began diverting all eggs from the plant to an egg-breaking facility.” The company assures it is reviewing its safety measures thoroughly to prevent future occurrences.
