Guatemalan national charged with illegal reentry after prior deportation

A Guatemalan national living unlawfully in Burlington has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston for illegal reentry into the United States following deportation. Odvin Natael Chavarria-Lopez, 30, faces one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien.

The indictment states that Chavarria-Lopez was deported from the U.S. in July 2015. It is alleged that he illegally returned to the country and was discovered on May 6, 2025.

If convicted, the charge of unlawful reentry carries a potential sentence of up to two years in prison, followed by one year of supervised release and a fine reaching $250,000. Upon completion of any imposed sentence, Chavarria-Lopez would be subject to deportation once more. Sentencing decisions are made by a federal district court judge according to U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley alongside Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston. Assistant U.S. Attorney David G. Tobin from the Major Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution.

It is important to note that the details within the indictment are allegations at this stage, with Chavarria-Lopez presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
