The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, announced the extradition of Muhammad Shahzeb Khan from Canada to the United States. Khan is facing charges related to an attempted mass shooting at a Jewish center in New York. The case is currently before U.S. District Judge Paul G. Gardephe, with Khan's initial court appearance scheduled for June 11, 2025, before Chief Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn.
According to U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, "Muhammad Shahzeb Khan attempted to enter the United States to carry out a deadly terrorist attack on a Jewish center in New York City." Clayton emphasized that Khan's plan was in support of ISIS and was stopped by law enforcement efforts.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that "the foreign terrorist organization ISIS remains a clear and present danger to the American people," highlighting the Department of Justice's role in securing Khan's extradition and commitment to prosecuting him fully.
FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia commented on the disruption of Khan's plot due to international cooperation: "Due to the dedication and commitment of the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force and our partners here and internationally, we were able to disrupt Khan’s evil plans."
NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch remarked on the alleged antisemitic motives behind Khan's plot: "Thanks to the proactive work of the NYPD, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, that plot was stopped before it could become a tragedy."
Khan began planning his attack in November 2023 while residing in Canada. He communicated with undercover officers about his intentions to use AR-style assault rifles against Jewish centers in an unnamed U.S. city. By August 2024, he shifted his target to a prominent Jewish religious center in Brooklyn.
In September 2024, Khan attempted entry into the United States via human smuggling but was apprehended near Ormstown, Canada.
Khan faces charges including attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and attempting acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries.
U.S. Attorney Clayton praised various law enforcement agencies for their roles in thwarting this plan and thanked Canadian authorities for their assistance.
This case is managed by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kaylan E. Lasky and David J. Robles with help from Trial Attorney Kevin Nunnally from the Counterterrorism Section.
