Senate committee plans hearing on modernizing U.S. rail network

U.S. Senator Todd Young, Chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety, has announced a subcommittee hearing scheduled for June 18, 2025. The hearing titled "On the Right Track: Modernizing America’s Rail" will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST in Washington D.C.

The hearing will focus on the current state of the U.S. freight and passenger rail network with aims to enhance safety, improve efficiency, foster innovation, and ensure long-term viability. The discussion will include potential regulatory and policy reforms as part of the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization.

Senator Young emphasized the importance of railroads beyond transportation: “Freight and passenger railroads are about more than just transportation. This industry supports thousands of good-paying jobs, which strengthens Indiana’s role as the ‘Crossroads of America’ and better connects our communities to markets across the country."

Senator Cruz also highlighted the significance of railroads in moving goods across the country: “Railroads are essential to moving goods across this country, especially the agricultural and energy products we rely on daily." He noted growing interest in intercity passenger rail and advancements in freight rail technology.
