Ernst discusses INNOVATE Act with Iowa City small businesses

As part of her River to River tour across Iowa, U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship Chair Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) visited small businesses in Iowa City. The purpose was to discuss the potential impact of her INNOVATE Act on the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. Ernst aims to enhance innovation and strengthen America's technological leadership.

During the meeting, Ernst emphasized how her proposed legislation would expand opportunities for startups and small businesses in the heartland. This, she believes, will boost America's competitiveness on a global scale.

The event drew positive reactions from participants who voiced their support for the INNOVATE Act. Jessica Hyland, Executive Director of the Iowa Biotechnology Association, remarked: "Senator Ernst understands the importance of the SBIR/STTR program to Iowa's biotech entrepreneurs and to the long-term economic growth of our state.” She highlighted how these programs contribute significantly to Iowa's biotech ecosystem by supporting companies that develop new technologies and create jobs.

Billi Hunt, Executive Director of America's Cultivation Corridor, expressed gratitude towards Senator Ernst for organizing the roundtable discussion. Hunt noted that it provided a platform for innovators to discuss how programs like SBIR benefit their work. “I am proud to support the INNOVATE Act,” Hunt stated.

Will Dickson from Canopy Aerospace praised the framework outlined by the INNOVATE Act as crucial for stimulating innovation driven by small businesses. He mentioned that such reform is essential for maintaining US global technological competitiveness.

Ben Nicholson from Ursa Major recognized Congress's commitment through this act towards streamlining investment in domestic innovation which benefits defense-application small businesses.

Caleb Carr from Vita Inclinata Technologies acknowledged his company's gains from SBIR funding and supported Sen. Ernst’s efforts with hopes that it would ensure sustained viability of "America's seed fund."
