P. East Trading Corp., based in Bronx, New York, has issued a recall for its "Salted Smoked Split Herring" due to potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum. The product was found to be uneviscerated and over 5 inches in length, which poses a risk of contamination by the bacterium known to cause severe illness or death.
The consumption of uneviscerated fish larger than 5 inches can lead to exposure to Clostridium botulinum spores, which are primarily concentrated in the viscera. Symptoms of botulism poisoning include weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, respiratory issues, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. Immediate medical attention is advised for anyone experiencing these symptoms.
The affected herring was distributed in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut through various retail outlets. Packaged in 18 lbs wooden boxes under container code Lot 1 PRC5073, the product originates from Sea Star Seafood Ltd., Canada. Retailers may have repacked it into different packaging styles.
According to P. East Trading Corp., no illnesses related to this issue have been reported so far. Consumers who purchased the product are advised not to consume it and return it for a refund at their point of purchase. For inquiries regarding this recall, consumers can contact P.
