A bipartisan group from the House Select Committee on China has introduced the Advanced AI Security Readiness Act. The group includes Chairman John Moolenaar (R-MI), Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), and Representative Darin LaHood (R-IL). They were joined by Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Ranking Member of the House Intelligence National Security Agency and Cyber Subcommittee.
The proposed legislation aims to protect American artificial intelligence from foreign threats. It seeks to empower the National Security Agency (NSA) to detect and neutralize threats targeting advanced AI technology, safeguard AI systems through cybersecurity standards, risk assessments, and secure development practices, and secure U.S. AI leadership by preventing espionage and intellectual theft.
Chairman Moolenaar emphasized the importance of winning the AI race for America's economic and national security. "It’s simple: the U.S. must win the AI race," he stated. "This bill is a major win for our families, businesses, and communities."
Representative LaHood highlighted concerns about foreign adversaries targeting U.S. technology. “The Chinese Communist Party is aggressively targeting the United States’ advanced AI technology to undermine our national security,” he said.
Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi noted that artificial intelligence is a significant technology shaping global power dynamics. He stated, "As adversaries like the Chinese Communist Party seek to exploit vulnerabilities in our AI infrastructure, we must ensure the United States remains several steps ahead."
Ranking Member Gottheimer stressed the need for proper safeguards to defend national security and maintain innovation leadership. “That’s why I’m proud to co-lead the bipartisan Advanced AI Security Readiness Act with Congressman LaHood,” he included.
The legislation is available for public reading.
