Guatemalan citizen pleads guilty to illegal reentry into the United States

A Guatemalan man, Wilson Oswaldo Galvan-Lopez, has pleaded guilty to illegal reentry into the United States and was sentenced to time served. U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced the decision, which took place before U.S. District Judge Meredith A. Vacca in Rochester, New York. Following his sentencing, Galvan-Lopez was handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas M. Testani stated that Galvan-Lopez lacked legal status in the United States. In May 2023, he had been deported back to Guatemala but later reentered the country illegally without obtaining the necessary permission. His presence in the United States was discovered on March 24, 2025, during a traffic stop on Orange Street in Rochester.

The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at addressing illegal immigration and combating cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). The operation seeks to protect communities from violent crime.

The investigation leading to Galvan-Lopez's plea and sentencing was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations under Special Agent-in-Charge Erin Keegan.
