U.S. Senator Todd Young, representing Indiana and serving as Chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety, led a hearing focused on modernizing America's rail network. The session titled "On the Right Track: Modernizing America’s Rail" took place in Washington, D.C.
The discussion centered on the current state of both freight and passenger rail systems in the United States. These networks are crucial for transporting energy, goods, and people nationwide. The hearing also examined potential modernization strategies involving emerging technologies to enhance safety and efficiency while preparing for future demands.
Senator Young emphasized the importance of rail infrastructure to the nation's transportation system and economy. "Rail is the backbone of our transportation system and economy. It connects communities, moves freight efficiently, and supports thousands of jobs. From small towns to major cities, rail keeps America moving," he stated.
He further underscored Indiana's significant contribution to national logistics through its extensive rail network. "With more than 4,500 miles of freight and passenger rail, Indiana plays a central role in national logistics. Projects like the South Shore Line and West Lake Corridor show how public-private partnerships can deliver big results, enhancing safety and regional connectivity," Young added.
