U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Chairman John Boozman has expressed his support for a new initiative announced by USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins. The plan aims to address the threat posed by the New World screwworm to the United States' livestock industry.
The strategy involves a five-pronged approach that includes establishing a sterile fly dispersal facility in South Texas. This measure is intended to help control and eventually eradicate the pest, which poses significant risks to livestock and agriculture.
Boozman emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating: “The New World screwworm poses a serious threat to America’s livestock industry and the livelihoods of hardworking farmers and ranchers. I applaud Secretary Rollins for taking critical action to mitigate this risk and protect our livestock, agricultural economy and rural communities.”
This announcement highlights ongoing efforts by federal agencies to safeguard agricultural resources from pests that can cause substantial economic damage.
